Allergies are unusual reactions of the immune system that occurs in reaction to harmless substance. Basically the one that fights for these so called allergies are produced by the immune system called antibodies. Allergy attacks anytime and anywhere, thus this explains that whether you are not allergic to a certain substance before or even to anything that may cause an allergy, there is a possibility that you can have an allergy at any moment. Too often, babies are more subtle and vulnerable for this kind of situation.

When the body reacts to any allergies, it gives out the chemical called histamine that shows the signs of allergies.

10 Common Allergies in Children

• Red itchy patches on skin – this is a common sign of an atopic dermatitis which is also commonly known as eczema. It shows reddish and itchy patches on skin.
• Dark circles under the eye – an obvious indication of allergy due to sinu
• Allergic crease at the bridge of the nose – also known as allergic salute. Kids keep on rubbing their nose due to itchiness.
• Breathing through the mouth – breathing through the nose is congested due to allergy and that makes a child breath through their mouth.
• Watery, red, itchy eyes – also an indication that a child is suffering from allergic rhinitis.
• Ear infection – ear infections are common in children because when runny nose is not treated well or given enough medication, mucus  goes up to the ear causing infection, pain and bad ear odor.
• Runny nose – the mucus looks watery, clear and thin thus profusely shedding out the nose.
• Sinusitis – you will know that it is sinus when, aside from mucus discharge from the nose, it also involves coughing and a yellow discharge from the mouth and constant aches in the forehead.
• Continual sneezing –more than 2 to 3 times of sneezing is an indication of having an allergy.
• Behavioral problems – known as “allergic irritability syndrome”, this is due to the ailment carried by a child from home to school in which he or she suffers from a pain in the ear or an itch in the nose and reacts irritably when in school.

Can allergies be inherited?
Allergic tendencies may often be inherited such as asthma or hay fever. For most children, the kind of allergy that they are most likely to inherit it from their mother’s genes but it is not necessarily that when a mother is allergic to pollen or dust the child may also be able to inherit the same allergy from the mother. It can be that the pollen allergy to a mother will be asthma to a child. Even when allergies were handed down to the child, there are no studies proving that allergies may last until life time. Some may have it from birth and some may just develop overtime due to several trigging factors in the environment and some allergies also vanish as the child grows up.

Treating an Allergy

• A lot around the environment can trigger allergy to your child. To be safe from any type of allergy one should keep the child away from pollutants like smoke, dust mites, pollen from flowers, bird feces, small baggase flying through the air when one is living near a sugar central, hairs of cats and dogs, blankets that are made from wools and some other factors. Children who are prone to allergies should be kept inside the house and when outside, one should wear a mask so that an early prevention will no longer lead to a drastic attack of allergy. If this does not work out, you have to see the doctor so that you will be able to know on what and how to administer such medication. Most doctors recommend an antihistamine and steroidal medicines.
• When your child is being fed on bottles or milk formula, most often, they are prone to lactose intolerance which leads to a stomach trouble causing a child to vomit and to have multiple bowel movements. Doctors treat this by recommending parents to use lacto-free infant formula.
• Dust mites allergy may be prevented through a constant cleaning. A baby’s room should always be kept clean, deodorized and disinfected. A vacuum will help keep the dust from moving through the air since there is no dusting that is happening. Change the curtains regularly and keep the things or a toy that mounts dust.
• When your child suffers from eczema, you should put all your pets outside the house and have a dermatologist consulted for your child’s eczema. Naturally, doctors will recommend a cream to apply on the infected area.
