There are a number of things that an expecting mother should take care. It has been known for years that whatever she does, whatever she thinks has a direct impact on her baby. Hence it is advisable that a pregnant woman should not take much stress. Stress may impact the baby inside the womb from as early as 17 weeks post conception.
Research shows that stress can affect the baby from early stages itself. Prolonged stress in expecting mothers can increase levels of a certain stress-related hormones that are present in amniotic fluid. It has been found out that in response to maternal stress placenta releases Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH). However CRH isn’t harmful for the baby. Infact they aid in the development of fetal organs like lungs and brain. What is harmful is its excessive exposure and that has been linked with an increased risk of anxiety, cardiovascular diseases, ADHD and depressive disorders which may take place later in life.
According to Prof Glover, who is a professor of perinatal psychobiology at Imperial College School of Medicine, London, a study found children in the top five per cent band for behavioral problems were more likely to have a mother under stress in pregnancy. She says, “The most important thing women can do for themselves is to talk through any worries they have during pregnancy with their partners or family. We know that helps relieve anxiety and depression - don't suffer in silence but to seek help. For now - based on previous research - one thing is clear: high levels of stress during pregnancy can, in some cases, be detrimental to the health of the baby. To remain as stress-free as possible is certainly important during pregnancy. Of course, this is easier said than done as pregnancy itself can incite all sorts of feelings - from feeling overwhelmed, happy and nervous. Pregnancy can signify major emotional changes in mums-to-be, from mood swings to feeling incredibly anxious, which may well elevate women's stress levels.”
Hence it becomes extremely important that pregnant women should be given enough mental and physical support their family, friends and employers. This will ensure that they have a happy and healthy pregnancy, which will lead to a healthy and happy baby.
