As a parent, it is your responsibility that you teach your child how to conduct himself/herself properly. All of us desire to make our child good human beings and citizens, and for this certain basic guidelines must be followed. If you keep in mind some tips for training and educating your child good behaviour, your little one will surely become a shining example for others.
-
Value good behaviour of the child: it is important that the child realizes the importance of behaving nicely with others, be it with other kids or grown-ups. Hence pay heed to the child’s polite requests, etiquettes in conducting their self and calm discussions by appreciating and rewarding the child. On the other hand, make sure to chide the child for rude behaviour and inappropriate requests.
-
Think before you speak: each word spoken by you leaves an impact on the child’s mind. So it is important that you do not behave in a manner that you do not approve for your child. The child learns a lot from you, and so it is important that you mean your words. Be truthful and always be with your words.
-
Convey your expectations to the child: the child must have a hint of how you are going to react to a situation. This can be done by letting the child know what is expected from him/her, in terms of behaviour. As you conduct yourself in the best possible way, the child must do the same in his life as well. This will help the child in taking smart decisions and become emotionally strong.
-
Inculcate positive thinking in your child: as we know, children readily believe what their elders tell them. They lack worldly experience and the parents must take full advantage of this fact by telling them that they can take on the world by their hard work. Children must be taught the value of effort. Also, this will instil in them a sense of self confidence as they now will now that you believe in them.
-
Set a strategy to prevent misbehaviour in future: after analyzing your child, you will know on which instances he/she repeatedly behaves in a manner that is not acceptable. Thereafter, set specific rules and communicate those to the child. These rules should have provisions for both good and bad behaviour.
-
Punishments must act as teachers: as mentioned, you must set rules so that the child is punished each time he/she behaves in a manner which is not acceptable. The punishments must be carefully chosen so that they are not very harsh on the child but on the other hand, teach the child the value of time and being responsible. For example, you can reduce the television time to half for a week, and instead involve the child in activity such as gardening.
-
The foundations of a responsible adult must be laid early: the child must be taught traits like responsibility, time and money management, politeness, basic etiquettes and leadership at an early age. If the child learns to be disciplined from start, there will no problems in future years.
-
Recognize your child’s positive and negative points: every child is different. Appreciate your child for the unique abilities he/she possesses and always be a source of encouragement. Correct your child’s mistakes but always be affectionate to the child, in spite of their behaviour.
-
The child must be taught to value himself: Always teach the child to consider himself as unique and gifted. Also, the child should feel good about his/ her personality and achievements.
-
Provide a healthy atmosphere: a family that plays together stays together. Follow this example and always try to provide your child with a congenial and affectionate environment that will help in their mental development.
