Today we are living in a consumer-driven society where moral values seem to have taken a backseat for all. However, in the due course we realize the importance of good values and regret upon not paying heed to our parents' advice.
Well, we are sure you certainly don't wish the same to happen to your kids. Along with the best of education, clothing, and food; as parents it is your moral obligation to imbibe ethics in your kids. Though there are schools to educate them about the same but family is the first place where their learning commences and you of course are their first teachers. If you fail to do it today, tomorrow may not give you a second chance and the damage might be beyond repair. It's better that you make the best use of time and start raising kids who have moral values as once they take on the charge, society will experience a new air of development.
Here check out the 8 ways that can help you in teaching moral values to your kids and help them grow into better individuals:
1. Teach use of polite words like 'Please', 'Sorry': Polite words like 'sorry', 'please' have a great impact. Teach your kids the meaning of these words and see they learn to use them as well. As parents you must also make use of these words in your daily behavior especially while talking to or in front of the kids. If they make a mistake or hurt anyone, tell them to say Sorry; or if they need to borrow anything from someone, explain how saying 'Please' helps.
2. Watch your own actions and words: Your kids learn from your acts and mostly follow your ideologies until the time they are capable enough of working on their opinion. Therefore, it is very important for you to watch your actions both in public and private. Check your tone when you speak to your domestic help or any person who is below your status. If you speak to them in a polite manner, your kids will also do the same.
3. Don't fight or say bad words in front of the kids: There are times when we tend to lose our control and engage in verbal fights with our friends, neighbor or anyone for that matter. While you might be fighting for a specific reason, your kids may not know the real reasons behind. Try to never indulge in any fight when your kids are around. Also, speak in a low tone and never use any of the bad words. Your kids quickly learn your behavior so don't present a poor picture before them.
4. Devote fix time: Make it a habit to spend some quality time with your kids on a daily basis. Take breaks from your busy schedule whenever possible. You can set a reminder on your smartphone for whatever time is feasible to you. Whether it is 5 pm, 7 or 9; just fix a particular time when you can speak to them and tell them some good things about life and values.
5. Share moral based stories: Teaching is best done when accompanied by some real life examples or meaningful stories. You can always make them learn the ethical values by reading out some good stories to them. Talking about great leaders and their early childhood is also an effective tool. Make them watch some good movies or the children's tales that have some moral. You can even read out to them their school textbooks which too have many moral stories.
6. Look for their company: All your efforts will bear no fruit if your kids are in bad company. Always remember that other than you, kids get influenced by their teachers, friends and others around. See to it that they aren't exposed to bad company much. They must be in a good circle so that their good qualities get more polished.
7. Design some easy to follow rules: When governed by rules, kids display more scope for self-improvement. Design some rules that are simple to follow, but can cast a long lasting effect on the future of your kids. Make them follow rules like behaving politely with elders, saying thank you when someone helps or gifts anything, never telling lies and a lot many. Give them some nice gifts if they follow all rules as this will encourage them.
8. Teach the art of sharing and gifting: Whether you have a single child or more than one; always see to it that they learn the art of sharing. This way they will never be selfish. Teach kids that sharing is a good habit and God is pleased by kids who share their things with the poor and needy. You also practice the same so that they get inspired by you. Sharing and gifting must be encouraged amidst the siblings too.
Remember, whatever you teach them today will have a long lasting effect on their persona in future. Therefore, it is very important that you imbibe them with the right values and principles.
