Teaching children is a huge responsibility, and especially so in the case of autistic children. Try to understand these gifted children and work on them by understanding their world. A few simple tips will aid you in this task.

Children with autism are often visual thinkers. Rather than explaining things to them verbally, opt for graphical aids such as charts, drawings, hand actions and slide shows. Also, keep in mind that children can get stuck with complex images such as maps, so keep the teaching area clear of distracting images. Maintain a schedule; as such children strongly resist changes. Use simple instructions instead of long sentences; as such children have trouble following them. Repeat instructions if required to make them clear to the child. Such children are often very good at drawing, painting or math. Identify the child’s ability and encourage them. Such children have poor motor skills, resulting in poor handwriting. A good way out is to use the computer, allowing the child to type instead. Provide sensory input such as rocking of chairs to induce better communication with the child. In some cases, it is quite the opposite and sensory inputs like sound of bells may aggravate the child.
