Asperger’s syndrome is a developmental disorder which makes it difficult for the sufferer to interact with others. The disorder is considered a high-functioning type of autism, making the person socially awkward. He tends to repeat certain behaviour and dislikes any change in the routine. This disorder is first detected around the age of 3, and is a lifetime condition. With proper treatment and guidance, patients tend to behave more socially and their condition improves.
There are several treatments available for Asperger’s syndrome, focussing on different problem areas. Such people have difficulty in expressing their emotions and talk without change in volume, pitch or tone. Cognitive behaviour therapy helps such children cope with the repetitive behaviour and emotions. Occupational therapy improvises upon their motor skills. There are programs to improve upon their social skills, although personal relationships continue to be a problem. Speech therapy handles everyday conversation with others. Parents are also trained to help their children while at home. Asperger’s syndrome also has conditions like anxiety, depression and aggressive nature. To counteract these, antipsychotics, stimulants and drugs with serotonin may be prescribed. With treatment and support,
people with this disorder learn to live independently and work successfully in all fields.
