In pelvic inflammatory diseases the female reproductive organ gets infected. Starting from the cervix, the infection continues to spread upwards to the uterus and fallopian tubes. After this, the ovaries and surrounding structures also get infected due to the disease.
The cervix is the opening to the womb which prevents bacteria and infections in the vagina from spreading up to other organs. But in case of an infection in cervix due to a Sexually Transmitted Infection, it might not be able to prevent bacteria from reaching other organs and structures. The infection causes the internal and female reproductive organs to get inflamed.
Pelvic Inflammatory disease refers to all such problems of infection of different organs and reproductive parts of a woman. It includes cervicitis in which the cervix gets inflamed; salinity's causing inflammation of the fallopian tubes which can make it difficult for the suffering woman to become pregnant; endometritis in which the lining tissues of the uterus get inflamed and peritonitis which is an inflammation of membrane lining the abdominal cavity. This disease is caused due to spread of a sexually transmitted disease.
Causes of PID
Unsafe sex and multiple sex partners increase the risk of infection causing a Pelvic Inflammatory Disease.
Sexual Intercourse
There are a lot of reasons due to which a woman can get a PID. The most common cause is having sexual intercourse with a person who is already suffering from gonorrhea or such other disease. The sexual contact can transfer the bacteria to the cervix of woman making her infected. Sometimes it can also occur without contact with a gonorrhea or Chlamydia patient but in such rare cases, even doctors are not able to detect why bacteria spread in the organs.
Bacteria
Two most common bacteria that are a cause of Pelvic Inflammatory diseases are Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhea. In most of the cases of the disease, these two bacteria are the major cause.
