Gandhi Jayanti is one of the most important national holidays of the motherland of India. Celebrated on 2nd October each year, Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated to mark the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi. This day reminds us that Gandhi wanted a united India, and his efforts should not go waste because of falling prey to materialistic gains in today’s society.
Importance:
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, or Bapu as he is popularly known as, was born on 2nd October, 1869 in Porbandar. He is the “Father of the Nation” and played the most important role in independence of India from the British dominance. He followed the path of “satya”, truth and “Ahimsa” or non-violence, and he freed India from the foreign oppression by use of these antics. He is a true symbol of truth and peace. 2nd October is a red-letter day in Indian history, when a national hero of immense calibre was born. Thus, this day is held in high esteem by all Indians.

Prayers are held at Raj Ghat in New Delhi where Mahatma Gandhi’s last rites were conducted. This pious event is attended by the President, the Prime Minister of India. Everyone pays homage to this great leader on this day. “Raghupati Raghav”, Gandhi’s favourite devotional song can be heard in every nook and corner of the country this day.
A national holiday is observed on 2nd October. Schools celebrate this occasion by doing social works like planting trees and helping the poor. On this day, liquor is not sold or consumed throughout the nation. People remember the events of Gandhi’s life and commemorate his martyrdom.
