Why is it celebrated?
Independence Day is celebrated every year on the fifteenth day of August, to commemorate the most important event of Indian history, India’s freedom from the British rule. On this auspicious day, the tricolour was unfurled for the first time at the Red Fort by Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru.
Importance:
India was declared a sovereign state on 15th August, 1947 after a long struggle of around 2 centuries against the British rule, in which a lot of our brave Indian patriots died. Legends like Bhagat Singh, Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel and many more are remembered on this auspicious occasion. In the time of growing caste conflicts and crime rates, this day is important as it makes us remember that the leaders who laid down their lives for gaining our country’s freedom, wanted our country to be united and self-reliant. It is not merely the anniversary of India’s freedom, it reminds us of thousands of known and unknown saviours that worked for our country’s independence and paying our respects to them.

The Indian Prime Minister hoists the National flag of India on Red Fort (Lal Kila) on this day. The prime minister then addresses the nation. This ceremony is telecasted live on several channels across the nation. Cultural programs and flag hoisting ceremonies are conducted in all parts of the country, by politicians and senior officials of all organizations. Schools and colleges celebrate this great day with much zest. Several competitions and events are organised, patriotic songs are sung and students present the vivid depiction of the independence era.
