Major Reasons for Infertility in Women
There are many women who do not get pregnant even after many years of their marriage. This is because of infertility, which can happen to both women and men. When we talk of infertility in women, then there are many reasons that lead to infertility in women.
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease known as PID is the major reason for infertility in woman. It is caused by blocked fallopian tubes. Ovulation disorder is also another factor for female infertility. Birth defects involve the structure of the uterus and uterine fibroids are associated with frequent miscarriage. Age of women is also another factor that causes infertility as egg production in women’s ovaries reduces with growing age.
Causes for Infertility in Women
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) or Endometriosis
PID or Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) or Endometriosis is termed to be the most common disease causing female infertility. It occurs due to infection of the pelvis or reproductive organs which also comprises ovaries, the fallopian tubes and the uterus. It occurs due to infection of the pelvis or reproductive organs which also comprises ovaries, the fallopian tubes and the uterus. Normally, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease stems from bacteria that cause sexually transmitted diseases (STD), such as gonorrhea or Chlamydia. Another reason that causes PID is Pelvic Tuberculosis. Non-sterile abortion under unhygienic conditions is also another reason for PID. Ruptured appendix is also responsible for PID. The symptoms of PID or Endometriosis include, acute pain during menstrual periods, and more bleeding irregularly. A frequent miscarriage also causes Pelvic Inflammatory Disease.
Ovulation Problems
Due to problems such as hormonal ones, release of grown-up egg from a woman’s ovary gets prevented. When any one part of the system controlling reproductive function fails, it causes ovulation problem. This system contains the hypothalamus which in an area of the brain, pituitary gland, adrenal glands, thyroid gland, and genital organs. Signs of ovulation problem are irregular or missing periods, too much bleeding or less bleeding. Stress, or athletic training can affect a woman's hormonal balance. Ovulation problem can also occur due to a hormonal imbalance from a serious medical problem like a pituitary gland tumor.
Poor Quality of Egg
Damaged, immature, developed with chromosomal abnormalities or poor quality egg is also a reason that prevents pregnancy in a woman. This problem generally occurs during age between 30 to 40 years. Incapability of fertile egg to implant in the uterus can also cause infertility in women. In women, cervix mucus is thick and impenetrable to sperm until ovulation. Before ovulation it becomes clear and flexible. It allows sperm to move through the mucus in the uterus up to the fallopian tubes for fertilization process. Due to some infection if mucus is unable to change during ovulation, it resists pregnancy. If mucus contains antibodies that kill sperm before it reaches to egg, it can also act as a barrier in pregnancy.
Polycystic Ovarian Syndromes (PCOS)
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, also known as PCOS, is one of the major reasons for infertility in women. In PCOS, the ovaries generate extremely high amount of androgen (a male hormone) which creates high level of LH and low level of FSH, which is for balancing hormone. In such condition the follicles fail in emitting a mature egg. In the absence of the egg, the follicles swell with fluid and form into cysts gradually. The process is repeated each time with swelling of the ovary until it reaches to the size of a grape. In this situation, progesterone is not produced and level of the estrogen remains unchanged. PCOS cause irregular ovulation. Common symptoms of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) are fast weight gain (high level of androgen causes obesity), facial hair, acne and irregular menstrual periods.
Female (Fallopian) Tube Blockage
Due to Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) or endometriosis, fallopian tubes get damaged or blocked. Damaged or blockage resists eggs to reach to uterus and the sperm to reach to the egg. Other reasons for damaged or blockage of fallopian tubes are sexually transmitted diseases such as Chlamydia, surgery in the pelvis and a ruptured appendix.
