As your little one gets ready to explore his world of knowledge and learning at school, you are bound to get concerned over his safety. All this while, he was right in front of your eyes and you were always there to help him out.
But now things would be different. He will be away for a few hours of the day and you will get to see him once he is back from school. Mothers often get worried thinking how their toddler would manage this new phase of life. Your concern is genuine and quite apparent as your toddler is still to grow up in order to take his responsibility while being away from home. However, things can be managed effectively if you focus on a couple of points.
You not just need to update yourself but even your toddler. You will have to prepare him for this new phase so that there are no hiccups on the way. Here check out some of the safety tips you must follow for your preschooler.
1. Make your toddler acquainted with his pre-school
The very first thing you need to do is take your little one on a tour to his pre-school. Let him have an understanding of the place. Make him meet his teachers, other helping staff at school and let him familiarize with the faces he will now be seeing every day. Take your child along to pre-school whenever it’s possible as this will give him the extra time to get familiar with the atmosphere and once he joins it on a regular basis, he will not face any anxiety or nervousness.
2. Plan out the mode of commute
Many parents prefer to drop and pick their little ones to school on their own. However, if both parents are working or if at all it won’t be feasible for you to pick and drop your child on your own; you will have to plan for an alternate. When planning the commutation mode, it would be better to stick to transport facility as provided by school. If you plan to hire some private transport then make sure that you verify all the details, such as information about the driver and other things properly.
3. Make your child familiar with the auto or bus driver
Let your child know which bus or auto he is supposed to be in. Introduce him to the driver and also speak to the driver in order to know him as a person. Be very particular about your child’s safety and security in the bus or auto. Keep monitoring whether or not your child is having a safe ride. Speak to other kids in the bus or auto occasionally just to make sure everything is going well.
4. Keep all emergency contact numbers handy
You should always have the important numbers handy which relate to your child and his school. You must have the numbers of your child’s class-teacher, admin office, the bus or auto-driver or any concerned person who can be contacted in case of an emergency. The school will provide you with the needed numbers and if they don’t, make sure you ask for the numbers.
5. Fill the important fields in your child’s diary
The way you need some emergency numbers to contact school, similarly; school will need some emergency contact details and other vital details about your child. And the best place to fill in all these details is the school diary. Make sure you fill all the important fields as mentioned and give precise information.
6. Share the concerns if any
If at all you have anything in particular to share about your child, make sure you do it without fail. For instance, many kids have phobia of water and they don’t feel comfortable with the toddler pools. If your child has it, speak to the teacher in advance so that she can take necessary measures. Also, if your child is less active or gets tired very soon after doing any physical activity; report the same to his teacher. Remember, your toddler will not be able to share all these details and unknowingly he might end up facing some difficulty. So, ensure you share all your concerns with the right person.
7. Educate your toddler
You may do everything possible to ensure the safety of the little one. But kids being kids can always invite trouble in one or the other form. They may get injured while running around, indulging in some fight with fellow toddler or while playing. These things can’t be controlled by anyone else. You will have to educate your child to be careful from his end so that major casualties can be prevented. Teach your toddler about the safety measures he has to take when in school. Teach him that pushing other kids or running recklessly can only cause trouble to him.
8. Monitor day to day activity
At times, your little one might face trouble from the people around. Speak to your child about his day at school on a daily basis. Get to know if he feels happy about going to school or is rather reluctant. Observe his behavior and you will know how he feels about school, his commutation mode etc. Take him in confidence so that he openly shares his concerns with you.
For the initial years at school, you will have to be more vigilant as parents as your toddler won’t be able to manage his safety. Keep giving him the inputs as and when needed so that he stays updated about his surroundings.
