Children mimic their elders! They have been your mirror image and will continue to be so. So is it good news or bad news? Well, the news stays good until your toddler speaks out something completely inappropriate like “Get out!” or “Keep quite!” Such unpleasant words coming out of your angel looking child can be super alarming. Fortunately there are ways to handle and stop your child from talking back.
Keep your calm
Never forget, your children have all the skills to push your anger buttons. Getting angry and firing words back on your child will never be helpful. Instead you should set an example for your child, by staying calm and keeping your temper in control. Replying your child in a softer tone will help him calm down and know exactly how he is expected to behave.
It’s a Natural process
Remember that your child is still in a developing phase and talking back is something which adapted by every kid. It can be quite difficult to tolerate and can often be depressing as well. But there will be times, you will have to remind yourself that you are a good parent and it’s all part of a natural process.
Keep Track
Talking back is often induced by disturbing or negative events. Try to keep track of events after which your child talks back and try to ward off those triggers. Insufficient sleep, extracurricular activities or hectic school routine are some common examples.
It’s a give & take relationship
In order to get respect, as parents you have to be supportive, firm and respectful to your child. Your child should feel safe when expressing his opinions and should be assured that you are listening. Emphasize on the message that they will only be heard and listened to, if they are able to speak in respectful and calm manner.
Listen!
Once you have persuaded your child into speaking calmly and respectfully, it’s time to listen and pay attention to your child. Show your child that by listening to you and giving you respect, he has earned your attention and time. This will help your child learn the right way to communicate with you.
Keep check on your child
See what you child follows of likes the most. What TV shows your child is interested in? Which cartoons impress and attract your child most? Nowadays there are many shows which induce sassy and blunt attitude in your child. Try to avoid your child’s exposure to such shows and comedies.
Back talking child can often be upsetting and frustrating, but it is quite important to keep yourself calm and relaxed. Your anger and harsh response will leave a negative impression on your child and induce further difficult condition. Remind yourself that the calmer you are, the easier it will be to control the entire situation. To earn respect from your little one, you need to give the respect, support and calmness your child needs.
