When God wished to bless us, he gave us a teacher. Undoubtedly, teachers are the ultimate gift human race has received. A teacher is often seen as a visionary, a prophet, a person who is blessed with immense knowledge and who never minds sharing it all with his students.
Importance of 'Guru' as per Indian Culture
Indian culture gives the highest regard to 'Guru' or teacher. Even if we look back, we have a number of examples in history that talk of 'Guru' and student relation. One of India's famous saints and poet Kabir, praised the mightiness of teachers saying, “My teacher and God are here, to whom should I make my first bow, Let the glory be onto the teacher, who showed me the path to God”. He chose teacher because it was the Guru who made him aware of God. Without teacher, we would have neither known God, nor ourselves.
How Parents Can Help Kids Understand the Value of
Guru?
If you thought you are out of the picture, then re-think. When it is about your child and his teacher, you can't choose to be a mere spectator. You will always have the major role to play, that is, to make sure your child respects his teacher and follows all the right teachings. You may have helped your child choose the best card for his teacher, or made some cookies that he can present to her teacher; but have you told him what this day is all about. What is the importance of teachers in our life and why September 5th is observed as National Teacher's Day? If not, then read on.
Teacher's Day: The History Behind
India had no concept of Teacher's Day before 1962. Though we had been honoring teachers, prophets and saints since ancient times, but there was no provision of celebrating the importance of teachers on a particular date. The big change came in 1962, when India's second President Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, proposed to observe his birthday as Teacher's Day.
Dr. Radhakrishnan was born on September 5, 1888. He was one of India's highly influential scholar, philosopher and above all a great teacher. He gave a major contribution in the field of education. When he became the President of India in 1962, few of his students met him and requested to be allowed to celebrate his birthday on September 5. Taking this as an opportunity to honor teachers as a whole, Radhakrishnan instead suggested to observe the day as Teacher's Day. Ever since then, the whole of country commemorates the birthday of this great scholar as Teacher's Day on September 5 every year.
Our Teachers: The Pillars of Society
Dr. Radhakrishnan always acknowledged the importance of teachers in our society. He held great regards to them and always encouraged students to be respectful towards their teachers. They truly are the pillars of our society. We may grow up to become successful lawyers, doctors, engineers or businessmen; but had it not for the knowledge we acquired from our teachers, we might have not learned the true values of life. Whatever profession we are in, or field we choose to work, our basics were all made stronger by the teachers. And this is one fact we should always remember and respect. Admiration and respect for teachers is very important. Parents must nourish this relation and make kids give right regards to their teachers.
Mode of Celebration: How Students Acknowledge Their Teachers?
Teacher's Day is the day of great celebration and fun at schools across. Though teachers and students report to school as usual, the day however, is spent in interactive and fun filled sessions. Students decorate their classes, organize cake cutting, make beautiful greetings with some special messages, and at some schools, senior students take up the responsibility of playing teachers for the day. For one day, teachers and students forget everything about tests, assignments; and only indulge in some creative fun.
The teachers are given a chance to take quality break from their hectic schedule and for a day, unwind and relax without being burdened with the daily tasks. Students too get a chance to express their gratitude towards the teachers and thank them for their support and guidance. In all, the day spreads lots of cheers throughout, captured in lots of sweet memories.
