You now have your little bundle of joy in your arms. Being a parent, you want to give your baby with everything that he needs. With the baby's arrival, the time has now come for you to indulge in some comprehensive shopping. You must have even made the list of all the baby essentials.
However, before you splurge in, here are some points that need consideration. You need to analyze if your baby needs all the stuff available at the baby store. Confused? Well, you don't have to be. The reason why we have put up the above question is that everything that's labeled as 'Baby Essential', doesn't necessarily happen to be good for the baby. Though buying the baby products is solely your decision, but you should be aware if the product does more harm than good.
So, let us check out the possible risks as associated with the 'Not-So-Beneficial' baby products:
Walkers: Most parents vouch for walker considering the fact that these can help their little one take a step on his own. However, researches have proved that the prolong use of walkers hampers bone development in the legs of the growing baby. More than a walker, the baby needs more of vitamin D from sun as well as calcium from the definite food sources. Your baby will learn to walk without any support by the time he is 13 month old. There is no need to fasten up the walking process.
Pacifier: Most parents vote for pacifiers as the must haves as they soothe the thumb sucking babies. These pacifiers even comfort the baby during teething when the gums ache. However, amidst all good, the pacifiers come with certain risks too. The major one being, leading to nipple confusion. They can even hinder oral cavity development, give rise to infections and affect teeth alignment in future. If you feel, pacifiers are still vital, make sure to use them wisely.
Feeding bottles: Most new moms rely heavily on feeding bottle and we are sure they'll freak out if told to put the bottle at bay completely. Though feeding bottles are no way better than breast feeding but, mothers favor them given how they make feeding completely a soothing affair. However, child experts state that while these bottles aren't that harmful, they still can't be the best substitute to a mother's breast. Extreme care must be taken with the use of bottles as they are prone to infections. And when using the feeding bottles, you must limit the usage to one or two feeds that too when you are out with the baby.
Gripe water: It has been in use since generations, however; doctors still don't recommend the use of gripe water. They are of the view that the ingredients used in the gripe water or most commonly known as 'Janam Gutti', have the tendency to irritate baby’s innards. While parents and elders at home still swear by gripe water, it is advisable to seek your pediatrician's advice before feeding your baby with gripe water.
Kajal or kohl: The trend of applying thick line of kajal or kohl under baby’s eyes dates back to ages and is mostly done with the belief that it can ward off the evil spirits. Science certainly doesn't favor this theory but it holds the view that kajal can be harmful to the baby's delicate orbs.
Diapers: Child healthcare experts suggest that keeping the baby off diapers when at home can be a ideal thing to bring into practice. It is advisable to toilet train them naturally. Though the mess can be a bit troublesome for the mothers, but a relief to the babies. Being off the diapers will allow the baby to breathe easy and it will even keep the painful rashes as caused by the diaper at bay. So when not going out, let the diapers be kept away.
Stuffed toys: They are truly a child's instant favorites but it would be better to keep the soft toys away from newly born babies. The reason being that the fur shed by these soft toys has the tendency of giving rise to breathing troubles in the babies.
Baby toiletries: Babies naturally emit a good smell. You don't need to lather baby lotion or use excess of baby powder. The powder, if inhaled by your baby, can reach into his lungs and cause breathing problems or irritation. Equivalently, baby lotions (even the ones that claim to have herbal ingredients) can cause skin rashes or allergies. Use them in a limited proportion and always stay away from the baby products that have very high fragrance, as these, under all possibilities, will be heavy on the chemicals and allergen content.
Be a wise parent, and don't just buy anything that falls in the baby product category. Analyze and examine the product's safety before bringing it home for use.
