Diaphragm is a type of barrier method to prevent pregnancy that barriers cervix as a birth control device. This is made up of soft silicone or latex forming a dome shaped with a spring molded that covers the cervix into a rim fitting to the vagina so that sperm cannot reach the uterus. Diaphragm is available in different shapes and sizes, arcing spring is the strongest type of rim where springs folds into arc and easy to be used by women with any vaginal tone. On compression of diaphragm the spring creates sealing against the vaginal wall. Diaphragm is not effective in preventing sexually transmitted diseases.

The diaphragm covered with spermicide and placed within vagina that covers cervix. The spermicide used here is immobilized that kills sperms making unable to mate egg for fertilization. The diaphragm may be left in vagina for 24 hours but with every sexual intercourse is repeated more spermicide must be inserted. The diaphragm must be left in vagina six hours after every sexual intercourse. Diaphragm does not interfere with women’s natural hormonal cycle as an advantage but it must be inserted several hours before intercourse for uninterrupted foreplay and intercourse. Risks like allergy may be reported.
