Hormonal patch also known as a female patch is a plastic patch which is wrapped around a woman’s vagina and prevents pregnancy by inhibiting the fertility of the woman. It is easy to use and does not have any kind of complications or side effects associated with it. Hormonal patches last for duration of three weeks only and after than you have to remove the old one and insert a new one. They release the same hormones estrogen and progestin into the woman’s body, the basic difference is that the hormonal patches are more effective
as compared to pills. In case of pills the hormones are absorbed by the bloodstream but in case of patches the hormones are absorbed by the vaginal skin. The absorption by vaginal skin is 60% higher than blood and therefore this method of contraception is more effective.
The working concept behind hormonal patch is release of hormones estrogen and progestin. When these hormones are absorbed by the vaginal walls and skin pores, they are mixed with the bloodstream and make their way to the pituitary glands. They suppress the functioning of pituitary gland and therefore prevent release of eggs from the ovary. No eggs means no pregnancy!
