What exactly is breast-feeding failure?
Breast feeding failure points to the situation wherein the child is not able to suck milk from the breast since the breasts are empty. If a child continues to suck the empty breasts, it may lead eventually to infection.
What gives rise to breast feeding failure?
Breastfeeding failures result out of a couple of factors-
Easy bottle sucking
Bottle sucking is relatively easy and hence if the child is given any kind of feed in the bottles, he would simply refuse to put in the effort for breast feed. As a result, over a period of time the milk dries up leading to breast feeding failures. This is by far the most common of the factors.
Supplementing breast feed with formula milk
Most of the mothers are concerned about the amount of milk that they are producing and the fact that whether or not the same is satiating the child. At times the mother may get worked up even though the child may be getting enough milk and start supplementing the breast milk with formula milk. In this kind of a situation where in the taste of the formula milk may seem better to the child and sucking would also involve less of a strain, bottle sucking will become the natural choice.
Infected nipplesOver a period of time, a woman may experience sore or infected nipples resulting out of continually sucking by the child. In this kind of a situation, it is frustrating for the mother because to breast feed a child in such a state is extremely painful and hence, the child may have to be bottle fed until the time mother recovers from her ailment. In some such cases, the child may refuse to go back to breast feeding even after the mother has recovered.
Ailing mother
At certain unfortunate times, the mother of the child could be suffering from certain ailments and may be administered drugs that are harmful for the child if ingested. To avoid such a condition, it is always better to take the child off breast feeding.
Inverted nipples
At other times, a mother may also be confronted with the problem of inverted nipples. In such a condition, she has no choice but to give up breast feeding.
The reasons for breast feeding failures are many, but a mother should always strive to do away such problems as far as possible. Apart from all such factors, bottle feeding may at times preferred by mothers who find it extremely convenient as compared to breast feeding. Over a period of time, when the child does not suck milk or sucks very little amount of milk, the milk tends to dry up leading to empty breasts. Therefore, it is in the interest of the child that he is breast fed as much as possible, so that the goodness of health and immunity that breast feeding brings, is passed on him. Not only that, breast feeding also fosters the great mother child bonding.
