Egg donation is practically a new concept in the field of medical science, which is fast gaining popularity. This is a procedure of donating the egg or female reproductive cell by a donor to an individual (woman) having difficulty in conceiving due to physical constraint through clinics or egg donation banks. There are certain risks associated with the process of egg donation but no such serious long term threats to a donor’s health is indicated.

Some minor risks that a donor is exposed to are; excessive swelling up of the breasts, gain in body weight, severe pain and cramps in the abdominal areas, blood clotting. Usually heavy doses of hormones are injected to stimulate the ovaries and increase production of eggs, in certain cases when excessive hormones are injected a donor may be at a risk of developing the condition of ovarian hyper stimulation. Research shows only 5% of egg donors may experience this typical syndrome that may lead to damage of ovaries due to over activity. Severe conditions may require not only controlled medication but also removal of the ovaries. Some other indirect risks which may be experienced are kidney failure, filling up of fluids in the lungs, convulsions etc.
