Surrogacy is identified as the practice of a woman to bear a child on behalf of a single woman or man or any couple. Surrogacy is usually of two types- traditional surrogacy; where a surrogate mother is genetically linked to the child and in gestational surrogacy the child and the surrogate mother may not share any direct genetic link. Individuals or couples who face problems like infertility, same sex relationship or medical obstacles prefer child birth via surrogacy.
Arrangements of surrogacy can be traced back to ancient Babylon. Even in those days the law permitted a childless woman to take help of a surrogate mother to bear a child in order to avoid divorce, the genetic father being the male partner. Many other instances of surrogacy can be noted in history, but it also has its share of controversies and complications like the case of Baby M in the United States in 1986.
Many countries still do not validate the process of surrogacy, even in India there is so specific enforcement of Law on this issue. However many famous personalities as well as commoners are adopting surrogate pregnancy. It is indeed a social boon in disguise.
