It is up to the parents to keep good care of their children’s voice for preventing any kind of speech disorders. One has to ensure that the voice box (larynx) remains healthy, and the vocal cords do not undergo high vocal strain. Also, help the child to monitor his voice better. Some simple tips are quite useful in voice care.
Encourage the child to drink adequate water. Having 8 to 10 glasses of water each day will keep the vocal cords lubricated and the child well hydrated. The water intake should be based on the age of the child. Also, reduce the consumption of aerated drinks like sodas and colas, and also caffeine. All these act as diuretics and flush out the necessary water from the body. The child’s diet should be composed of a healthy balance of fruits and vegetables. These have the right balance of essential vitamins and minerals and are also low on calories, keeping not only the voice but also the entire body healthy. When having spicy food, ensure you drink water along with it to avoid drying of the vocal cords. Avoid shouting, wailing and singing continuously to avoid strain on vocal cords. Set aside a time when the child does not talk at all, to relax the voice system. Encourage the child to use an easy voice and maintain good posture while speaking or
singing.
