As the baby is gearing up to begin their third month on Planet Earth, you may notice how fast she is growing out of her tiny clothes. The parents may find themselves busy shopping for new clothes and necessities this week, as the 11 week old is developing physically continually. The major changes and milestones associated with an 11-week old baby have been listed here:
Baby milestones in 11th week:
-
You may notice that the baby’s head is larger and the length has also increased a little. A normal baby is expected to grow by about 1 to 2 inches each month now. The baby is expected to gain 150 to 200 grams per week now. The muscle movements are coordinated and the limbs appear straighter. When on her tummy, the baby tries to raise her head and also pushes by throwing off her legs in this position. This is indicative of stronger limbs and neck muscles.
-
An average 11 week old baby has regular bowel movements and can wet 5 to 7 diapers each day now.
-
There is considerable development on the social front as well. The baby smiles a lot and may begin to stretch her arms out in anticipation of being picked up. More babbling, giggling and cooing is expected.
-
The baby is not going to begin talking anytime soon, but still has begun communicating by imitating actions, babbling and crying to express her displeasure. She communicates by making different noises.
-
At this age, the baby is expected to sleep between 16 to 19 hours every day. A major part of this will be completed at night, while the rest is included as day naps. The baby cannot sleep for more than 7 to 8 hours at a stretch without being fed. Babies this age have 5 to 6 feeds each day.
-
The baby’s cries are expected to change now, becoming more intense. This is because the baby knows their needs now and their cry changes accordingly. Looking for cues will help the parents understand what the baby needs.
The 11th week: what is required from the parents?By this time, parents may find themselves settling to the new routine. The baby now sleeps at night which means that the overtired parents can also have a moment of peace and time to complete pending chores. However, some things are to be kept in mind now:
-
Do not switch to solid foods at this stage, however tempting it may seem. Solid foods are to be prevented until the baby is 6 months of age to prevent allergies. Continue on formula milk or breast milk as the baby’s digestive system is quite weak presently.
-
Try establishing a regular sleeping pattern by bedtime stories and calming activities like soothing and patting the baby after placing her in the crib. Do not overtire your baby before finally putting her to sleep.
-
Give the baby reasonable amount of safe space to stretch her muscles. Tummy massages, baths and walks are a good way to soothe the baby. Also, talk with the baby while keeping eye contact and perform simple activities like playing peek-a-boo and playing music to help in her mental development. Babies this age develop mentally at a fast pace and interaction helps greatly.
