Your tiny baby is no longer a newborn and is growing right before your eyes. At 12 weeks, the baby has officially moved into the third month, which is a time of excitement and several changes in the baby and parents’ life. Let’s take a brief look of the baby’s development by the 12th week:
Baby’s milestones at 12th week:
-
Assuming the baby was born normally, this week she will be weighing around 12 pounds and measures 23 inches.
-
Baby is got much stronger now, and can lift her head when lying on her back for several minutes at a stretch now. When lying on tummy, she can lift her chest and head up which might resemble a baby push-up.
-
Another development is that the baby is now able to roll on to her back when you lay her on her tummy. Her knees and hips have become stronger and more flexible which allow her to lift herself up easily.
-
12 week old actively kick their legs and wave their hands; some also try to stand on their own if one holds them up near the floor. They are fascinated by their fingers and suck or play with them. In addition, they can bring their hands together, open their fists now and have improved hand and eye coordination which is evident when they try to grasp a toy dangled in front of them.
-
Babies undergo a growth spurt during this time and require more nutrition. Your baby may feel hungry more often, which implies feeding her more milk. One does not have to switch to solid food yet.
-
The vision has considerably improved by now and the baby is able to clearly see all the details of a face now. The color vision has also improved and the baby is able to track moving objects easily.
-
They stretch their legs and grasp objects that interest them. The grip is surprisingly quite strong, and they try to bat objects with their closed fist.
-
Acid reflux is a common issue with babies at this stage. Because the sphincter in baby’s esophagus is lax sometimes, the baby may vomit. The reflux normally improves as time passes, but if the baby does not seem to manage it; medication may be prescribed to control regurgitation.
-
The baby is now able to differentiate between speech and other sounds. She has begun to babble, coo, blow bubbles and sometimes even squeals in laughter. She can now also differentiate between family members and imitates their expressions.
-
You may also notice that the bowel movements are lesser than the previous weeks now, which means lesser diaper changes.
-
The baby’s sense of touch is also developing, which is evident by how she tries to feel everything in her hands. This must be encouraged by exposing her to a variety of textures and materials.
The 12th week: what is required from the parents?

The trick to improve your baby’s social skills is to always engage in conversations with her. While the baby still cannot say words, they will be stored in her developing memory. So, one must read out rhymes, stories and talk to her when feeding, bathing or walking her. She must also be allowed to watch other people talk in front of her.
-
The baby’s developing vision has to be protected from direct sunlight. Also, the mother needs to half a diet rich in leafy vegetables and yellow fruits containing antioxidants necessary to protect the baby’s retina.
-
The child tries to lift her head up when laid on her tummy, which must be encouraged by dangling a toy in front of her.
-
As the baby has begun to roll over, it is important that the crib must be free from fluffy or suffocating bedding and toys to prevent the risk of SIDS. Do not leave the baby unattended when she is awake.
