Your little one is finally 4 months old, a delightful moment for all the parents. The baby is ever so eager to explore everything around her and has charmed everyone with her cooing and chuckles. The several physical, mental and social developmental milestones this week are:
Baby Milestones at 16th week:
-
A typical 4-month old baby weighs 13.25 pounds and has grown to 24.25 inches. The weight gain is relatively slow now, around 20 to 25 grams each day.
-
The baby is able to sit straight now when propped up and when sitting has no head droop. She is also able to raise her head to 90 degrees when placed on her tummy.
-
All the babies are now able to roll back to front and vice-versa now. You may notice that the baby’s grasp is particularly strong and she tries to grab new objects and does not let go easily.
-
She not only touches object of new shapes, textures and designs but also places them in her mouth. Rattles particularly catch the fancy of babies, but they are unable to pick it up again if it falls.
-
16-week old sleep for 14 to 16 hours each day, taking 9 to 10 hours nap during night.
-
The baby is discovering a whole new range of emotions and begins to interact with others by not only crying but also expressing her happiness, displeasure, content and joy. She is able to babble, coo and laugh out loud. She plays with you by trying to vocalize and may remain attentive for as long as an hour now. Her language will develop much faster if the parents continually communicate with the baby, and they may also notice that the baby becomes drowsy when not given proper stimulation.
-
Hand-eye coordination has improved and she pulls toys dangling in front of her using both hands.
-
The baby plays when placed in front of a mirror and is able to recognize and differentiate between bright colors such as red, yellow and orange. They are also able to recognize their parent’s touch and voice.
-
The feeds are reduced to 4 or 5 each day now, though the baby still gains weight. However, feeding may become difficult now as the baby is continually distracted by what is happening in the surroundings.
-
Some babies may also begin to teeth, although the first tooth does not appear before 6 months for a majority of babies.
-
The baby tries to lip read the parents now and may begin to make sounds like ba-ba or ma-ma. However, she does not associate such sounds to parents yet.
The 16th week: what is required from parents?
-
As the baby’s vision is developing, provide her a huge range of bright colored objects to play with.
-
The baby needs some time to develop her neck, legs and arm muscles. Let the baby be free and stretch her limbs. Increase tummy time gradually.
-
One can speed up the baby’s speech development by imitating her expressions and repeating what she is saying. In time, she will realize that what she is saying is making a difference.
